THE OLD WINTER PALACE
OLD CATARACT HOTEL
The Old Winter Palace in Luxor, operated by Sofitel, was built in 1886 to attract the nobility of Europe. The ultimate privilege is to moore one’s own yacht on the quay side opposite the Old Winter Palace. Late King Farouk, French President George Clemenceau, as well as many Crown Princes and Princesses from Europe and Oriental Royal Families made it their preferred place of residence. It also accommodated such celebrities as Jane Fonda. Each guest room is different with high ceilings, beautiful fixtures, as well as modern amenities and comforts. The Old Winter Palace is home to one of the best restaurants in Egypt, the ‘1886’, a place of elegance.
The Old Cataract Hotel resides on a granite hill overlooking the Nile River’s edge in Aswan. Taking its name from the rivers first Cataract, it was built at the end of 19th century and remains one of the finest hotels in Egypt. Being a favorite of the elite during Egypt’s British colonial period, and with the release of the movie written by Agatha Christie and Anthony Shaffer, ‘Death on the Nile’ in 1978, the hotel received a grand revival of interest as one of Egypt’s monuments to its colonial period. Absolutely charming with magnificent views of the Nile and Elephine Islands, all guides simply point out that it is the finest place to stay in Egypt. Egypt Reservation Centre is proud to offer this unique hotel as part of our tours.
